Before Google, local Directories, like Yahoo’s Directory, were a major way that businesses were searched for and found. Today they are still a valuable resource through which many businesses are contacted and you still want to be placed well in such directories. And not only do they offer a way for people to find your company directly, Google uses these directories and a way to check your authority. You are more likely to be ranked higher in the search engines if you are in these business directories. That’s why directory submission is so important.
What Directories?
Directories come in two forms. On one hand, you have the more formal directories, like Yahoo’s directory, that are meant more to give you authority. These directories commonly have a cost associated with them, but can mean the difference between being on page one or page two of Google. Just like the cost of joining a trade organization is worth it for the resources they provide, formal directory submissions are well worth the small cost.
On the other hand, there are more informal directories, such as Yelp or Angie’s list which are actively being used by people to find and compare services. Some people think that if you are in these directories, you are not worth considering. The good news is that most of these are free for a regular listing. Once in these, you will start to receive direct traffic to your site from these directories.
The most important one of all
Although getting in all of the directories is important and can bring you traffic, there is one that rises above the rest: Google Places. This is the directory that all of the local results (that show up on the map) come from. Your ranking in these local listings are effected by how well ranked your own site is and how well the submission is written. We give extra care to your Google Places directory submission making sure that your listing is as good as possible to get your listing as high as possible.
